GLENWOOD AREA
DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS
The Glenwood Area Dollars for Scholars Chapter was established on May 25, 1999. At that time thirteen members of the community signed on as the Board of Directors. The ultimate goal of the Chapter is to furnish a scholarship to each student who applies.
At the time of formation of the Chapter, each Board Member contributed ten dollars. The registration fee with the state was one hundred dollars, leaving the chapter with thirty dollars to begin our work.
Through various fund-raisers, the Chapter was able to award one $250 scholarship the first year. In 2008, we will award 26 scholarships ranging in value from $250 to $1000, with a total value in excess of $12,000.
The core of our program is our Endowed Scholarship Program. To establish an Endowed Scholarship requires an initial amount of $5000. We guarantee 5% return on the money invested. Our Endowed Scholarship Account is invested with the Omaha Community Foundation. The principal is never touched, only the interest. We currently have 12 Endowed Scholarships ranging in value from $5,000 to $94,000. Our current investment value is in excess of $198,000.
The chapter has four primary annual fund-raisers - the "Ram Ride" (bicycle ride), a luncheon, a golf tournament with Iowa Western College, and a wine tasting.
We are constantly striving to add more Endowed Scholarships and thus award more scholarships.

"Perhaps your parents are getting ready to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and you want to give them something really special. They have a beautiful home that all their kids were raised in...I would come out and photograph their homesteasd to preserve for many generations to enjoy. Do you have a special view that you like to look at everyday? What about a favorite barn? A windmill with a beautiful sunset behind it? Ideas are endless. Please call me to set up a time to visit about the picture you want to capture. 712-520-8548 or visit www.redbudphotography.com
